The Right Way To Install An Electric Strike Lock

You can improve your door security significantly by replacing your traditional strike plate with an electric strike plate. The user can only open the door once an electronic release mechanism has been triggered with an electric strike plate. Today, many houses, offices, and apartment buildings are using this type of system. Basically, you can only open the door if someone is inside and they push a button on the video intercom system.

1st Step:

Use a screwdriver to remove the existing door strike plate. Take your time and avoid stripping the screws. Stripped screws will make the plate much more difficult to remove.

2nd Step: Use Your Drill To Create A Larger Hole

You’ll find that an electronic strike is bigger than the original strike plate. Make the hole larger using your drill or a roto-zip. The best way to achieve this would be to use a pencil to trace the edges of the strike onto the door frame. This will give you your drill edges. You should mark all dimensions, including depth. Check to see if there are any wires coming out of either side of the electronic strike.

3rd Step: Work Out Your Wiring Method

One way of wiring is to create a deep hole by drilling into the wall space at the back of the door frame. Now you can fish the wires through the wall. You’ll need a long drill bit, because most frames are reinforced with extra boards and you’ll need to drill through them all. An alternative way of wiring is to create a notch in the frame and run the wires inside the door frame.

4th Step: Powering The Electric Strike Lock

It’s likely that the power wire will be two connected wires, like headphone wires. Remove the tip of the power wire, split the positive and negative leads by pulling them apart from each other. Check your owner’s manual if you’re unsure how to make the right connections. Polarity is not observed at this point.

5th Step: How To Install The Electric Strike Lock

You can now place your electric strike lock inside the newly created hole. Use your drill and the screws provided to secure the lock. Test the door by opening and closing it to ensure it sits flush with the frame and there are no obstructions. Next, refer to the instructions provided in your system’s user manual for instructions on how to connect the wires to the Door Station.

6th Step: Time To Test Your New Electric Door Strike!

The easiest way to test your new electric door strike is to have someone try to open the door while the lock is enacted; then again when the release is activated. Don’t hesitate to call the customer service number in your manual if you have any trouble at all. If you’ve purchased from a reputable company, technical support should be easy to reach.
